It originated as a moated house which was possibly the home of a keeper in the deer park to the south of Halton, which was probably built in the second half of the 15th century. Hallwood Manor was later known as Hallwood Farm. By the 17th century it had become the birthplace and home of Sir John Chesshyre. In the 19th century the building was used as a school called Hallwood Academy. It is now a public house.
